The external logistics sphere demonstrates gradual adaptation to the new global trade conditions. Despite certain limitations, related to the sanctions policy of the Western states, Russia is making efforts to improve its economic relations with developing markets in Asia, the Middle East and Latin America. Integration processes, such as the Eurasian Economic Union, and also bilateral agreements contribute to further expected growth of transit shipment volumes and growing number of logistics corridors, linking regions.
It is forecasted that development of maritime infrastructure, particularly in the Arctic and in the Far East, will be a priority area. New investment projects to upgrade seaports and to develop multimodal shipments will help improve cargo delivery timelines, increase transit security and make Russian goods more competitive on the global market. Development of railway and highway corridors, focused on integration of infrastructure assets of neighboring countries, will be an important aspect of external logistics, enabling creation of a uniform supply system across the Eurasian space.
The internal logistics in Russia continues its transformation due to active transport network upgrades and digital technology implementation. Development of information systems, enabling real-time control of cargo transit, optimization of routes and inventory management, is becoming a key trend. These systems are based on “the Internet of Things”, artificial intelligence and big data technologies, significantly improving decision making response and reducing logistics operational costs.
Special emphasis is given to development of regional logistics centers, capable of providing comprehensive services to cargo flows at local levels. In 2025 expansion of the distribution center network with integrated IT solutions is expected, enabling significant logistics chain reductions, service level improvement and lower transportation costs. Along with this, the state is also implementing transport infrastructure development programs, including highway maintenance and construction, railway line upgrades and development of multimodal terminals.
Digitalization is coming forward as a key driver for competitive internal and external logistics. The use of cutting-edge information technologies facilitates integration of multiple links of logistics chains. Even today leading companies are investing into automation of warehouse processes, use of robots to handle cargo and implementation of unmanned transport vehicles. In 2025 these solutions will see even wider use, enabling reduction of the number of errors, acceleration of order processing and increasing overall efficiency of logistics operations.
Development of a nationwide information exchange system for the logistics market participants is viewed as an important element of digital transformation. Joint IT platforms, integrating transportation companies, freight forwarders, insurance companies and customs services allow to build a complete freight traffic picture and promptly respond to arising challenges. This, in turn, facilitates improved forecasting and higher transportation security levels.
Considering global environmental trends, the development of logistics in Russia in 2025 will be focused on reduction of negative environmental impact. Use of environmentally friendly technologies, transition to alternative fuels and optimization of transportation routes will help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and lower the overall environmental footprint. In that context, there are active ongoing transport electrification projects and modern logistics enterprise energy-saving and recycling methods are implemented.
Moreover, the state supports initiatives, aimed at sustainable development of the transportation infrastructure. Programs for reconstruction and upgrades of logistics assets are implemented in compliance with energy efficiency and minimal ecosystem impact requirements. These measures are not only instrumental in protection of the environment, but also unlock new opportunities for those businesses interested in long-term partnership with government agencies.
Despite the positive trends, the industry faces a number of challenges. These primarily include the need to adapt to changing foreign economic conditions, efforts to upgrade obsolete infrastructure in some regions and demand for highly-skilled labor. Resolution of these issues would require a comprehensive approach, incorporating government support, private investment and active cooperation of logistics market players.
In the unstable global economy settings, the strategic objective of Russia is to develop a flexible and resilient logistics system, capable of fast response to external shocks and internal change. It is forecasted that a successful resolution of these issues will lead to higher efficiency of transport systems, increased exports and improved investment climate in the country. In its turn, successful development of the logistics industry will facilitate creation of new jobs, development of adjacent economic sectors and strengthen Russia’s positions on the global market.
Therefore, the forecast for development of the Russian logistics in 2025 demonstrates dynamic changes in the industry, focused on infrastructure upgrades, implementation of digital technologies and higher environmental awareness. A comprehensive approach to resolution of the existing issues, active cooperation between government agencies and business, and an emphasis on innovations will enable development of an efficient, competitive and resilient logistics system, capable of responding to modern challenges.
